Large seaside home, IOS
Large, superb ocean-front home in IOS (Cyclades Islands) home of GAÏTIS, the painter.
Yannis GAÏTIS (*) built his villa in front of another house designed by him also with the same remarkable quality. Both designed true to Cycladic tradition, each complements the other and, together, playfully conspire with their natural surroundings to create perfect harmony. This house hugs the southern slope of a hill protected from the prevailing winds. A 10 minute walk via a stone path from the road provides access to the house. Away from the noise of the village, the location, just above a small creek, is perfect. Paintings, sculptures and lithographs by Gaïtis decorate different parts of the house for which he also designed furniture.
The villa: follows the slope with multiple levels and terraces. There are six rooms divided between two upper levels and one bathroom (shower) plus outdoor shower. The intermediate level has a large living room, kitchen and shaded terrace (for the perfect summer living). Terraces create an easy flow around the house and form part of the spectacular view from these rooms with the Aegean Sea beyond.
Access: Milopota beach is a 10 minute walk; a two minute walk to the semi-private creek below and a 10 minute walk to the main road at the top of the house.
Location: 36.715475, 25.287367
Region: The IOS island can be reached by boat from Athens or directly from Santorini Island (international flights).
Gaïtis lived for twenty years in France (1954 - 1974) before his return to Greece. His talents have been celebrated in numerous exhibitions. A museum, built in his honour and bearing his name, displays not only his works but also hose of his Greek contemporaries including those of his wife, the sculptor Gabriella SIMOSSI.
